CAN THO CITY INVITES SUMITOMO GROUP TO INVEST IN INDUSTRIAL PARK DEVELOPMENT

On January 27th, 2026, Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Can Tho City, hosted a meeting with Sumitomo Group (Japan), who came to Can Tho City to explore opportunities for cooperation and investment in the development of industrial park (IP) infrastructure. Also attending the meeting were Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee and Head of the National Assembly Delegation of Can Tho City, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Can Tho City and representatives of relevant departments and agencies.

At the meeting, Chairman Truong Canh Tuyen provided an overview of the city’s socio-economic situation in 2025 and introduced Can Tho’s strategic advantages in terms of transportation, logistics, and regional connectivity. He noted that the city’s transport infrastructure has been increasingly improved, creating favorable conditions for investors to conduct research and field surveys. Currently, Can Tho has 13 IPs with a total area of nearly 2,825 hectares, including 9 IPs in operation and 4 IPs under infrastructure development.

Chairman Truong Canh Tuyen expressed his pleasure in welcoming Sumitomo Group and highly appreciated the Group’s interest in Can Tho’s investment environment, considering this visit an important opportunity to exchange information and promote future cooperation. At present, Can Tho hosts 124 FDI projects with a total registered capital of 7.45 billion USD, including 13 FDI projects from Japan. The city is oriented toward attracting high-quality investment with advanced and environmentally friendly technologies, which aligns with Sumitomo’s strengths and creates expectations for effective cooperation between the two sides.

On behalf of the Japanese investor, Mr. Eita Fujikawa, General Director of Sumitomo Corporation Vietnam Co., Ltd., expressed his gratitude for the warm invitation from Can Tho City to explore investment opportunities. He stated that the Group operates in various fields such as industrial park infrastructure, energy, and metro systems. In Vietnam, Sumitomo established its first office in 1955 and began investment operation in 1990. The Group has invested in the development of several industrial parks in northern provinces and is currently considering expanding its industrial park projects in southern provinces.

Mr. Akito Shiraishi, Assistant General Manager of the IP and Urban Sustainable Business Strategy Division of Sumitomo Group (Japan), remarked that he was pleasantly surprised that the duration (Ho Chi Minh City-Can Tho) is only about 2.5 hours, whereas he had previously assumed it would take 4 to 4.5 hours. This demonstrates the significant improvement in transportation infrastructure in the Mekong Delta region in general and in Can Tho City in particular from the perspective of Japanese investors.

Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, affirmed that Can Tho will continue to be as the central city of the Mekong Delta region and a suitable destination for Sumitomo’s investment strategy in southern Vietnam. He emphasized that the participation of Sumitomo Group, together with investors such as VSIP, would help form a diverse industrial infrastructure ecosystem, contributing to the attraction of FDI inflows and secondary enterprises. The city proposed that Sumitomo soon study potential sites for surveys in order to move toward an official investment decision, and committed to directing relevant departments and agencies to provide support during project implementation.

After the meeting, the Can Tho Export Processing and Industrial Zones Authority guided Sumitomo Group delegation on a field visit to survey the planned locations of IPs proposed for investment in the city.
